Sensing and Perceiving light.

Quite a cool article on a few artists approaches to sensing and perceiving light and dark.
Edensor talks about how enthralling it would have been when the first artificial light was invented, and installed, how it transformed space entirely, and transformed the "nocturnal world from one primarily experienced as dark to one thoroughly colonized by bright illumination."
Worth a read. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/17458927.2015.1042227

Opera House Lane - Concept

Looking at Projecting an image onto an interactive screen constructed from hanging clear tubes. The tubes will be filled with smoke and light that leaches from the bottom of the tubes covering the ground. The viewer will be encouraged to walk through the tubes where they will then be immersed within the installation viewing from the inside out.

Opera House Lane - Why?

Following the space analysis the group has opted to propose an installation within Opera House Lane.

Factors that enforced this decision are:

  • Thoroughfare - most commonly walked paths on the exhibitions route
  • Close to the city
  • Condensed space (width)
  • Relatively Sheltered
  • Visual Height
  • Variety of fixtures
  • Ambient light (not pitch black, but not too bright)
  • Pre existing interesting visuals
  • A range of textures/surfaces
  • Grungy urban atmosphere
  • Directional perspective (funnelling effect)
  • Opportunities for varying degrees of hanging installations
  • Manageable size in terms of creating immersive instaltion
